International Scientific Symposium
Slavic Terminology Today,
May 11th -13th 2016
(Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Institute for the Serbian Language of the SASA, Academy of Sciences and Arts of Republika Srpska, Matica Srpska)
At the international scientific symposium Slavic terminology today, 60 papers were presented, and the participants were from 11 countries: Serbia, Republika Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Croatia, Slovenia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and the United States. Given the Slavistics-related character of the conference, the paper topics, as expected, were primarily dedicated to descriptive, normative and comparative aspects of the Slavic terminology today and in its history.
On the first day of the symposium, a meeting of the members of the Terminology Commission of the International Committee of Slavists was held. At the Commission's meeting, among other things, the dynamics of the writing of the collective monograph Slavic terminology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, as well as the compilation of a bibliography of the publications related to the terminology issues for this period, were discussed. Beside the members of the Commission, the symposium was attended by local and foreign philologists specialising in various areas of linguistic research, since terminology is an important segment of the nomenclature of each individual science, field, discipline, as well as of linguistics in general.
The papers allowed us to gain a direct insight into the following:
• the similarities and differences in the approach to terminology-related issues in different Slavic linguistic sites,
• what has been done and what should be done in each of the Slavic languages,
• linguistic and extralinguistic processes in the terminology systems of the Slavic languages,
• the schools and traditions from which specific knowledge is derived,
• lexicographical undertakings, etc.
The Symposium has reminded us that one of the main goals with which the Society of Serbian Scholarship was founded was the creation of the Serbian scientific terminology. The International Scientific Symposium Slavic Terminology Today is part of the celebration of the 175th anniversary of the establishment of the Society of Serbian Scholarship (today the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts).
